A 12-year-old boy in Newton received a surprise like no other over the weekend when a number of Star Wars figures paid him a visit.

When Harrison Cummings-Thomas was finishing chemotherapy for a brain tumor, his family learned that his doctor referred him to Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island, which provides once-in-a-lifetime experiences for children facing serious illnesses.

For the past five years, Holliston resident John Mulvaney has donated his time to make a difference for children with life-threatening medical conditions. Mulvaney, who has owned Natick-based TLC Painting since 2008, has worked on 15 “wishes” since 2017. Projects have ranged from room re-decorations to tree houses to play houses. He and his staff do the painting work free of charge.

All Harrison ever wanted was a nice, big treehouse in his backyard. Little did he know that his wish would come true, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and some local helping hands.

When two families were approached by Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island, they had no idea their children’s wishes would be fulfilled by so many members of their own community.

The Cottage Park Yacht Club recently hosted a successful weekend of events to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which supports children and families facing critical illnesses. Featuring adult and youth sailing regattas, a dinner, and an auction, the weekend helped to raise more than $34,000, enough money to sponsor three wishes for children and their families.

An 8-year-old got the treehouse of her dreams this month. Libby Shepard, from Duxbury, is battling cancer and was in awe after she unlocked her new treehouse, now named “Libby’s Spectacular Treehouse,” which is modeled after the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse at Disney World.

Last week, a 7-year-old girl’s wish to visit Newport came true. Summer Cernoch, of Manassas Park, Virgina, had her wish granted by Make-A-Wish® Massachusetts and Rhode Island, which creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

One Boston author has decided to keep those promises and walk every neighborhood in the city for a good cause. Patrick Maguire will hoof it to raise money for Make-A-Wish Foundation Massachusetts and Rhode Island and Stride for Stride, and you can join him.
