Make-A-Wish Illinois announces Rick Planos of Schaumburg as the recipient of the 2022 Exceptional Creativity Award for planning and executing an extraordinary, yet low-cost experience to enhance a child’s wish journey.

A wish granter since 2016, Rick enjoys getting to know his wish families and making every part of the wish journey special. Most recently, he arranged for a birthday celebration at Dave & Buster’s for a child waiting for the delivery and installation of their wish for a hot tub. This is just one example of many over his years as a volunteer. Thoughtful gestures like this help to create lasting bonds with his wish families.

“Rick goes above and beyond to have his wish children experience much joy while waiting for their wishes to be granted,” said Daniela Penaloza, bilingual wish specialist with Make-A-Wish Illinois. “He is a TRUE rock star.”

Rick continues to actively volunteer as a wish granter with 18 wishes completed and several more in progress. He enjoys collaborating with other volunteers and is often energized after connecting with them to share ideas. 

“Thank you for letting me be part of this. I’ve made so many great friends and met so many inspiring people,” Planos said. “I’ve gotten back way more than I’ve ever given and that to me is an incredible treat.”
