Rebecca Rijk, Sycamore
After experiencing the joy and magic of a wish firsthand, Rebecca saw how powerful these moments can be for a child and their family. As a wish alum herself, the experience stayed with her, and years later it inspired her to give back to the same community that gave so much to her. Now, Rebecca has been a WishMaker for three years and has helped countless children and their families along this incredible journey.
Today, Rebecca serves as a full wish volunteer, guiding children through each step of their wish journey from discovery to celebration. Along the way, she has taken on the additional responsibilities of mentoring new volunteers, supporting fundraising events like Wish Ball, and helping to recruit others in her community to volunteer with Make-A-Wish.
Getting started in the role, she says, was easier than expected. The sign-up process was straightforward, and she never once hesitated in her decision. After her training, she began to step into bigger roles and deepen her impact on Make-A-Wish.
Through her work, Rebecca has gained more than she ever imagined. “Wish kids and their families have taught me not to give up,” she shares. “Seeing people going through harder journeys than my own and have a more positive outlook on life is very inspiring.”
Rebecca’s favorite part of volunteering with Make-A-Wish is the relationships. “The connections I get to build with wish kids and their families are so near and dear to my heart,” she says. “Each wish kid I meet I am so glad I get to help them through this journey.” She also values the community of fellow volunteers who share the same joy in their work.
Rebecca believes deeply in the mission of Make-A-Wish. While there are many nonprofits worthy of support, she says there’s something special about the way Make-A-Wish creates joy. “Make-A-Wish is making experiences happen. What other organizations get to do that?”
For those considering getting involved, her advice is simple. “Don’t overthink it.” Rebeccas time with Make-A-Wish has been one of the most rewarding experiences of her life, and she has zero regrets about her involvement. “Take a deep breath and jump right in, everyone is here to support you along the journey.”
At the heart of it all, Rebecca is grateful. Grateful for the wish that impacted her, and for the opportunity to create that same magic for others.
“I’m so thankful I get to do this every single day; it is the best experience and I’m so glad I was able to do it.”
Rebecca was recently presented with the 2026 Power of the Wish Award by Make-A-Wish Illinois. The Power of the Wish award is presented to a volunteer who delivered a meaningful and personalized experience for their wish children, building anticipation for their wishes and increasing the impact of their wish journey.
