Niko loves being around water. From swimming to boat rides, or just simply being near water puts a smile on his face. Diagnosed with a rare blood disorder called aplastic anemia, he was no longer able to take part in his favorite water activities, dampening his usually bright spirit.
After spending more than a year in the hospital, Niko endured a bone marrow transplant, chemotherapy and radiation. These intense treatments sapped his strength, and everyday activities became difficult for him. During this time, a nurse from Niko’s transplant team referred him to Make-A-Wish.
Niko and his mom discussed what would make him happiest and then worked closely with his wish granting team to create a wish to include all of those things. Passionate about his Greek heritage, his wish to go to Greece encompassed everything his heart desired.
Ready for an adventure, Niko and his family set out from their west suburban La Grange home to Athens, Greece. The plan was to explore ancient historical sites, immerse themselves in culture, and go on a day cruise to the stunning Greek Islands.
While on their island cruise in the stunningly blue Aegean Sea, he was over the moon. His mom Casey said, “You could not wipe the smile off his face”.
One of Casey’s favorite moments from the trip was climbing the Parthenon. For Niko and his family, this was more than just a physical challenge. The climb also represented Niko's recent medical journey and the strength and persistence needed to find his way back to health.
“[The wish] gave us an opportunity to reconnect and culminate his healing story in a fantastic celebration.”
