Make-A-Wish Illinois announces Melissa Akinlawon of Chicago as the recipient of the 2022 Wish Volunteer Impact Award recognizing a volunteer or volunteer team that has created a lasting impact throughout the entire Wish Journey.

Markeet was granted an amazing day-long shopping spree in March 2021. A bright, fun-loving 11-year-old who loved math, dancing and spending time with his family, Markeet was surprised when an incredible day of shopping started with big sendoff from the Chicago Fire Department, his teachers and neighbors as he left his home to a waiting limousine.

Nominated by Markeet’s mom, she says that Melissa went above and beyond making her son’s day awesome. With them through the day, Melissa and wish partner Caroline Moore had let merchants know what Markeet was looking for so he would be sure to find it when he shopped their stores. With a stop at his favorite restaurant and the excitement of the sendoff, the day was full of wonderful moments for everyone who loved Markeet.

“Just seeing the smile on my baby’s face made the day for me and my family,” Markeet’s mom shared. “I really appreciated everything they did for him before and after his wish.”

Sadly, Markeet later succumbed to his illness. Melissa stayed in touch with the family throughout and together, they joined Walk for Wishes by forming #TeamMarkeet to walk with their friends and family on Markeet’s birthday to honor the brave, strong and gentle giant they all loved. 

“The smallest thing can make the biggest difference for kids going through a tough illness,” Melissa said. Seeing the impact these gestures have and letting wish families know they have support is what keeps her motivated to continue granting wishes. 

Melissa has also involved in fundraising as a previous member of the Associate Board of Make-A-Wish Illinois, a group of young professionals who support the mission through event-based fundraising and spreading awareness in the community.
