Finding strength and joy in Hawaii

There were many tears as well as smiles for how lucky he is to be on the other side of his battle.

Jimmy, a 19-year-old from Glendale Heights, has always been a strong and determined kid. His family says he is extremely smart, a great athlete, and that everyone always loves to be around Jimmy. Although his diagnosis has made it harder, Jimmy always gives 150% and dedicates his time to playing football, baseball, and hanging out with friends.

Diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of the pandemic Jimmy learned about Make-A-Wish from his medical team at Rush University Medical Center.  He knew right away his wish would be to visit Hawaii.

“Jimmy said to me in his darkest days, he always dreamed about going to Hawaii on the wish and it kept him motivated to keep fighting,” his mother, Marilyn, said.

Recently the family flew to Honolulu where they enjoyed their time on the island exploring paradise. The days consisted of a catamaran sailing trip with snorkeling, a luau, and a turtle tour that took them to some of Hawaii’s most famous landmarks.

“His favorite excursion was the catamaran boat day—the weather and water were so beautiful, and he loved snorkeling with dolphins, turtles, and fish,” Marilyn said.

Given that Jimmy had to isolate during the pandemic, she added said that this trip was also a great opportunity to spend time with his brothers making new memories.

“There were many tears as well as smiles for how lucky he is to be on the other side of his battle,” said Marilyn.
