Dylan Explores Hawaii

Dylan, 10, from Arlington Heights, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when he was three years old.

He had three years of treatment, and during that time Dylan and his family were introduced to Make-A-Wish. He shared his desire to go to a beach with a water park where he could meet Mickey Mouse.

After careful consideration and talking it through with Dylan’s wish volunteers, they all knew that Disney Aulani would be the perfect place.

Dylan’s volunteers arranged a surprise wish reveal at Dave & Buster's that even included hula dancers. Dylan's family and friends were invited, and volunteers presented several Hawaiian-themed gifts and a countdown calendar to build excitement.

"He has never given us a tighter hug; it felt like all the love in the world wrapped us up in that moment," said Joanna, Dylan’s mom.

A little worried he might be too old for the themed resort; Dylan’s parents were incredibly surprised and thankful for how much he enjoyed the trip to Hawaii. Dylan was ecstatic with the ocean-view room, pool, water slides, and beach.

The family was able to enjoy plenty of fun events, including the Rainbow Reef, meeting Disney characters, ukulele lessons, and paddleboarding. Dylan found a favorite meal: Caesar salad and shrimp Alfredo with shaved ice for dessert.

Dylan was excited to tell everyone at school about his trip when they returned home. He even chose to focus on Hawaii for a school report. He has fond memories of the trip and often brings it up in conversation.

Starting fifth grade in the fall, Dylan is doing well and loves riding his bike, playing lacrosse and football, and swimming on the swim team.

“We are all so grateful for the memories and experience,” his family said.
