South suburban volunteers find joy in giving back to help wish children.

Supporting their community has always been important to sisters Catherine Dixon and Sandra Julun, both of south suburban Homewood. Looking at more time in their retirement and for something they could do together, they discovered Make-A-Wish at an informational meeting held in their town. They fell in love with the mission and ever since have deepened their bond with each other as they volunteer in varied roles at Make-A-Wish Illinois.

“It brings me joy to be a helper,” Catherine said of why she volunteers. “I have realized that my life is not just about me. I am truly blessed and want to spread those blessings to our wish families and kids in every way that I can.”

“Seeing the families that we have met along the way and have helped in making their wish come true makes me so happy,’ Sandra added. “The wish kids are phenomenal and it's exciting being involved in something as massive and incredible as Make-A-Wish.”

In addition to gratitude from the families they work with, Sandra and Catherine’s hard work is recognized and appreciated by many Make-A-Wish staff. According to staff who work with them regularly, the pair know what they are doing and are one of the strongest sets of volunteers for the organization.

“Within the last year, they have jumped onto several wishes with families who need extra support,” said Carly Fishbein, senior wish coordinator for onboarding and discovery at Make-A-Wish Illinois. “They actively go out into that child's community to organize wish boosts, lunches/dinners, events, and connections.”

In addition to granting wishes, the pair often volunteer their time at fundraising events like Wish Ball and Walk for Wishes. Volunteering at this stage in their lives has made a strong impact on these women. They have both made lasting memories and connections helping families and children along their wish journey.

“As a volunteer, Make-A-Wish has brought me the love and kindness of so many families and people,” Catherine said.

“Being able to meet so many warm and wonderful people who are experiencing so many different challenges in their lives and seeing the joy we bring to them through Make-A-Wish brings me joy,” Sandra adds. “I am truly excited and blessed to be a part of Make-A-Wish. It’s been truly an experience that I will never forget.”

In April of 2023, Catherine Dixon and Sandra Julun were awarded the Agile Award by Make-A-Wish Illinois for their outstanding contributions in this area over the previous year.
