Brett Taylor, Bleacher Nation

A writer for a popular online blog focusing on Chicago Sports, Bleacher Nation, Brett Taylor first got involved with his local Make-A-Wish chapter over a decade ago. He wasn’t looking for recognition, he just saw a chance to do some good. What started as a personal interest in supporting children facing serious illnesses turned into a commitment that’s touched countless lives through a greater community.

“I was introduced to Make-A-Wish through their Columbus [Ohio] chapter,” Brett says. “It really struck me how much the organization cares not only about the children’s medical needs, but what it means to give them something to hold onto.”

Sports and wish-granting already had a natural connection, and it felt like the right fit. That connection became the foundation of something remarkable. Each year, Brett volunteers to blog for hours, even days straight in exchange for donations to Make-A-Wish Illinois as he covers the trade deadline for MLB.

The annual Blogathon fundraiser is a favorite of his readers and brings the larger community together to raise money and awareness of the importance of Make-A-Wish for children with critical illnesses.

Brett's efforts have raised more than $200,000 for Make-A-Wish Illinois over the years, allowing so many children to experience the hope, strength and joy of a wish.

Over the years, the Blogathon has turned into a rallying point for fans and supporters who look forward to using their love of sports to make wishes come true.

“It started small,” he remembers. “But the more we did it, the more I saw just how eager people are to help. They just need a connection, a reason, or sometimes just a reminder.”

While Brett can’t name a single favorite moment from his wish experience, that’s only because there are too many.

“Every year I’m blown away by how much people care. They show up, they give, they spread the word. And the passion for supporting these families never gets old.”

One thing that did surprise him, though, was much of an impact a wish can have.

“In the beginning, I understood that wishes gave kids joy. But what I didn’t grasp was how deeply it touches the entire family. Siblings, parents, even neighbors, they’re all affected by the journey. You start to realize you’re not just creating a moment, and you’re helping knit a community together during a hard time.”

Brett was honored with the 2025 Volunteer Fundraiser Award from Make-A-Wish Illinois in April, during National Volunteer Week.

When he found out, he was stunned. “I was speechless, honestly. It’s never felt like something I do alone. It’s the readers, my family, the people who show up and give and care belong to them just as much as me. I’m just lucky to have a platform that helps put this mission in front of the right people.”

“The beauty of Make-A-Wish is how it lifts up whole families and communities.”
