Twelve-year-old Ethan always wanted a dog.
He's an active kid who enjoys football and soccer. Due to his illness, Ethan hasn't been able to play sports, and due to the pandemic, there are fewer sports to play. Ethan and his family have been stuck at home during the past year, so Ethan wished for a dog to keep him company.
While in treatment, Ethan scoured the Internet for his wish pup. When he returned home, the goldendoodle that he selected was waiting for him. Ethan's sister named the puppy Roki (pronounced Rocky but spelled to reflect the family's Bosnian heritage). Ethan has been very consistent about training Roki, studying numerous dog-training videos online. Roki already knows his name, when to sit and how to the use the doggie door. Not only is Roki well-behaved, he's also affectionate and cuddly.
Ethan is only a fraction of his way through his treatment, but he's been feeling better lately. He exercises most days so he can be ready to play sports again once the illness is behind him. And now he has Roki by his side to buoy his spirits.
"I think the timing of getting a dog was perfect," said Ethan's mom, Mirsada. "We can't go out very much, so having a dog now is just perfect. Every day Ethan says, 'I can't believe I have a dog.'"
