A Garden and a Playground

Casen and Charlie are siblings who both live with a rare nervous system disorder. They have a progressive condition that affects physical movement, coordination, and memory. Despite the challenges they face, both children were granted wishes designed to bring joy, comfort, and meaningful improvements to their lives.

Casen’s wish has been fully granted, but Charlie’s wish remains in the design and development phase.

Because Casen experiences significant memory challenges, his parents wanted a wish that would offer long‑term value rather than a single, one‑day experience. Their hope was to create something that Casen could enjoy repeatedly and safely over time. As a result, Casen received a custom, accessible backyard playground tailored specifically to his needs and abilities.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Casen’s wish is how it interacts with his memory condition. Due to his limited short‑term memory, Casen reacted with fresh excitement nearly every time he walked outside for almost two years. Each time, he exclaimed, “I got a playground!” as though he were seeing it for the very first time. This joyful reaction turned an everyday part of his routine into a repeated moment of happiness and wonder.

The playground itself was designed with both safety and inclusion in mind. It features pour‑in‑place safety surfacing—the only one of its kind in the family’s town—as well as a specialized swing for children with disabilities.

These features allow both Casen and Charlie to play safely as their physical abilities change over time. The playground quickly became a beloved community landmark, with many locals referring to it simply as “Casen’s playground”.

Casen’s “Wish Day” was a large and deeply meaningful community event. His entire preschool class walked four blocks to his home to surprise him. Home Depot workers who traveled forty minutes to install the playground stayed to celebrate, wearing matching T‑shirts and personalized aprons.

Local police officers stopped by in their patrol cars, and Casen’s aunt flew in from Colorado, making the day even more unforgettable for the family.

Charlie’s (aka Charlotte) wish is currently being designed. Right now, they are looking at creating a nice garden space where Charlie can relax and smell her flowers. The garden path needs to be wheelchair accessible and a ramp needs to be put in. "It would be amazing as she has always loved flowers,"her mom said.

Like Casen’s wish, Charlie’s wish is intended to enhance overall quality of life rather than provide a one‑time experience.
