The Gebert-Arbaugh Polar Bear Challenge: A Cold Plunge for a Warm Cause
What is the Polar Bear Challenge?
The Gebert-Arbaugh Polar Bear Challenge is an annual cold plunge event where individuals and teams commit to plunging into the frigid waters of Lucky Peak Reservoir. The event is open to all who are willing to brave the cold for a great cause. Participants often wear costumes, bring team spirit, and raise money through sponsorships.
The challenge is traditionally held in early January at Lucky Peak Reservoir, just outside of Boise, Idaho. Participants register in the morning, enjoy the pre-plunge festivities, and take the plunge late morning or early afternoon.
The Polar Bear Challenge is a peer-to-peer fundraising event benefiting Make-A-Wish® Idaho (MAWI). Participants collect donations from friends, family, and businesses in support of their brave dive into the cold water. These donations help grant life-changing wishes for children with chronic illnesses across Idaho.

Wishes range from dream vacations and room makeovers to meeting a favorite celebrity or becoming something extraordinary for a day. Each wish is personalized and made possible by the generosity of donors and the spirit of events like the Polar Bear Challenge.

History of the Polar Plunge
The Polar Bear Challenge began over 20 years ago, founded by beloved local media figures Larry Gebert and Gary Arbaugh. Inspired by their desire to support local charities, they launched the plunge to bring the community together in a bold, meaningful way.
Larry Gebert was a well-known meteorologist at KTVB, remembered for his warmth, wit, and dedication to community causes. Gary Arbaugh, a radio host and local personality, shared Larry’s commitment to service. Together, they built a legacy that continues to bring joy and support to hundreds of families each year.
The Polar Bear Challenge has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars since its inception, granting countless wishes and touching the lives of children and families across Idaho. The event has grown steadily in size, with more plungers, donors, and corporate sponsors joining each year.
While the core spirit of the plunge remains the same, the event has evolved with time—adding online fundraising tools, enhanced safety measures, and expanded amenities. Looking forward, the Make-A-Wish team continues to innovate while preserving the unique charm and mission of the original event.

Cold Plunge Benefits
Cold water immersion—often associated with "Polar Bear Swims" or "Cold Water Swim" events—offers several potential health benefits.
● Boosted circulation and metabolism
● Reduced muscle inflammation
● Improved mood and energy from endorphin release
● Strengthened immune response
NOTE: Cold plunges can be dangerous for some people who have some underlying health conditions. If you suffer from heart or circulation issues, please consult your doctor before taking part.
Preparation is key for a safe plunge:
● Dress in layers and bring a warm change of clothes.
● Eat beforehand to boost internal warmth.
● Bring towels, blankets, and hand warmers.
● Acclimate slowly—even a few minutes of pre-cooling can help reduce the shock.
● Don’t plunge alone—buddy up and stay close to lifeguards.
● Know your limits and don’t stay in too long.
● Immediately warm up with dry clothes and hot drinks post-plunge.
● Listen to safety staff and follow event guidelines.

Impact throughout the Years
Each year, families whose children have received wishes attend the plunge to share their stories. Many speak about how their child’s wish gave them something to look forward to during treatment or offered a cherished memory during a difficult time. These moments of reflection remind participants of the event’s deeper meaning—and why a cold plunge is worth every icy second.
The Polar Bear Challenge has continued to connect communities and inspire individuals.
The event raises over $100,000 every year. This amount alone can help pay for 10 or more wishes for children with chronic illnesses. Make-A-Wish Idaho grants over 100 wishes every year to help give kids truly unique experiences.
