YPAC Membership Guidelines

PURPOSE:

The Young Professional Advisory Council (YPAC) is a significant resource to Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area. YPAC assists the Board of Directors, CEO, and staff by acting as ambassadors for Make-A-Wish through networking, fundraising, promotion, volunteering, and general advocacy of our mission to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. The council is made up of professionals under 45 years old who are passionate about being active and philanthropic members of their community.

MAKE-A-WISH RESPONSIBILITIES:

The chapter is committed to supporting YPAC through the following actions:

  • Communicating chapter activities - all council members will receive the CEO's monthly report, email newsletters, and other communications
  • Invitations to chapter events (internal events, external events, annual meeting, etc.), including opportunities to purchase discounted tickets
  • Providing marketing resources needed in advocating the mission, such as business cards, name tags, access to logos and marketing materials, contacts, etc.
  • Providing access to training for wish granting, celebrity wish liaison, and fundraising support
  • Providing opportunities for continued growth through YPAC, board, and events committees
  • Providing opportunities to assist with wishes, either individually or as a group, after completing wish granter training

TERM OF OFFICE / NUMBER OF MEMBERS:

YPAC members serve a staggered term beginning in September at the pleasure of the Board of Directors. Not to exceed 6 years of service, or 7 if serving as chair in last year.

The terms are as follows:

  • Initial 1 year term
  • If renewed, the 2nd and 3rd terms are 2 years

Council member’s renewal is based upon the approval of the Executive Committee, staff liaison, and Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area CEO.

EXECUTIVE MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES:

Each member is expected to support the chapter through the following actions:

  • Take a position in the YPAC Executive Council
  • Attend quarterly YPAC meetings (exact dates TBD)
    • Attend at least 75% of YPAC meetings throughout the year
  • Committee participation - lead/serve on YPAC committee and/or serve on Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area committees
    • Chair and vice-chair are non-voting Advisory Directors of Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area Board of Directors and invited to participate in meetings/retreats
    • Secretary serves on Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area Board Governance Committee
    • Membership & Impact Chair leads YPAC Membership Committee and serves on Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area Governance Committee
    • Event & Outreach Chair leads YPAC Events & Outreach Committee and serves on Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area Development Committee 
    • Mission & Messaging Lead serves on YPAC Events & Outreach Committee 
  • Promote & participate in both YPAC and Make-A-Wish events throughout the year
  • Fundraising responsibilities - the following remaining items can be contributed to the member’s annual give/get goal of $2,500:
    • Event tickets, raffle, or auction purchases made at a Make-A-Wish or YPAC event
    • Donations made to someone else’s walk or other fundraising page
    • Corporate sponsorship or table purchases that were a direct result of your efforts
    • Any personal or work fundraising
  • Be available to the Board of Directors, CEO, and staff for consultation and advice in the council member’s area of expertise.
  • Participate in ad hoc taskforces made up of council members, board members, CEO, staff, and/or volunteers created to address specific issues utilizing the member’s area of expertise

Each Executive Member is strongly encouraged to:

  • Attend wish training and fulfill a wish
  • Refer potential wish children to the chapter
  • Serve as an ambassador for Make-A-Wish

COUNCIL MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES:

Each member is expected to support the chapter through the following actions:

  • Attend quarterly YPAC meetings (exact dates TBD)
    • Attend at least 75% of YPAC Meetings throughout the year
  • Committee participation - serve on YPAC committee and/or serve on Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area Committees
    • YPAC Event & Outreach Committee
    • YPAC Membership Committee
    • Development Committee
    • Marketing & Communications Committee (requires relevant professional background)
    • Event Committee
    • Medical Advisory Committee (requires relevant professional background)
    • Finance Committee (requires relevant professional background)
  • Promote & participate in both YPAC and Make-A-Wish events throughout the year
  • Fundraising responsibilities - the following remaining items can be contributed to the member’s annual get/give goal of $1,000:
    • Event tickets, raffle, auction purchases made at a Make-A-Wish or YPAC event
    • Donations made to someone else’s walk or other fundraising page
    • Corporate sponsorship or table purchases that were a direct result of your efforts
    • Any personal or work fundraising
  • Be available to the Board of Directors, CEO, and staff for consultation and advice in the council member’s area of expertise.
  • Participate in ad hoc taskforces made up of council members, board members, CEO, staff, and/or volunteers created to address specific issues utilizing the member’s area of expertise

SUPPORTING MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES:

Each member is expected to support the chapter through the following actions:

  • Promote & participate in both YPAC and Make-A-Wish events throughout the year – at least 1 a year
  • Annual membership fee $150
  • Fundraising responsibilities – each Supporting Member is strongly encouraged to:
    • Attend wish training and fulfill a wish, if there is a need for wish granters in your geographic area
    • Refer potential wish children to the chapter
    • Attend networking and fundraising events

COMMITTEE DESCRIPTIONS:

Supporting Member Lead (part of Membership Committee)

This Supporting Member of YPAC will work closely with the Membership Committee Lead to connect with applicants interested in joining as a Supporting Member and keep them updated on events and other opportunities to contribute. Supporting Members play an integral role on committees, support fundraising efforts, and allow us to have an even larger positive impact on the org. This lead is the liaison to YPAC for Supporting Members, who are eligible to apply for council after one year as an SM.

Sponsorship Committee
Lead: TBD

One of the most important committees for YPAC, the Sponsorship Committee works collectively to solicit and gain corporate and individual sponsorships for YPAC events (Trivia Night, Comedy Night, and other virtual events). These donations are crucial to the success of our events. Go-getters who are comfortable pitching and cold-calling are encouraged to join!

Auction Committee
Lead: Theresa Sciole

Auctions take place during in-person events such as Comedy Night and Trivia Night. This committee is responsible for soliciting in-kind donations and organizing all items for auctions, both pre & post event. Examples of in-kind donations include wine tastings, gift cards, hotel stays, sports tickets/ memorabilia, etc.

Comedy Night Committee 
Lead: Katie Abrams

Responsible for helping the Comedy Night Lead coordinate talent, location, ticket sales, and general logistics for an in-person comedy night (or virtual if needed). As one of YPAC's largest fundraising events, it’s an opportunity to have a huge impact within the council and for Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area.

Trivia/Virtual Events Committee
Lead: Rishi Dixit

Responsible for organizing and running at least two online events in addition to an in-person trivia night (in-person if possible or a few virtual trivia nights if needed) on behalf of YPAC to support Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area in its fundraising efforts.
