Summary

Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area is a wish granting organization. Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Our Chapter serves children from Monterey County to the Oregon border west of Interstate 5. Research shows children who have wishes granted build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight a critical illness, improving quality of life and producing better health outcomes. The Marketing and Communications team stewards and elevates the Make-A-Wish brand, supporting Development in fundraising and Mission Delivery in wish granting.

We are seeking a collaborative and creative marketing manager looking to contribute their skills and experience to a mission-driven organization. This person will be responsible for telling our story and curating our content in order to convey the impact of our work and inspire people to take action in support of our mission. We are looking for a strong writer and editor who has experience with digital marketing, fundraising communications, journalism, and/or public relations, preferably at a non-profit organization. This full-time, exempt position reports to the VP of Marketing and may include supervision of interns and volunteers working on behalf of the marketing team.

This position is required to work in the Oakland office at least two days a week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as part of the current hybrid work model guidelines. Hybrid work guidelines are subject to change. There may be additional days that an employee may be required to work in the office from time to time related to specific projects/events/meetings with advanced notice. 

Salary Range: $78,000 - $85,000 Annually 

Responsibilities

Writing/editing

  • Interview subjects, conduct research, and write stories, including features and spotlights on wish kids, families, and alums; volunteers, donors, and members of the medical community.
  • Manage the chapter's editorial calendar, including assigning, editing, and tracking stories from intake to publishing. Oversee the work of content-related skills volunteers, including writers, editors, and proofreaders.
  • Write marketing and fundraising copy as needed for the website, emails, mailings, advertisements, media alerts, outreach materials, social media, and donor stewardship. Adhere to marketing best practices and brand guidelines.
  • Review external-facing content produced by others to ensure quality control and maintenance of brand standards.

Content and community management

  • Create, edit, and curate content across our internal sharing platforms and externally for media, partners, and other audiences.
  • Serve as managing editor for print and digital projects, including impact reports and Best Wishes, our printed donor publication.
  • Onboard wish alums and family members into our Wish It Forward program by helping to share their stories and connecting then with other opportunities to get involved, particularly as Wish Ambassadors and skills volunteers.
  • Share our storytelling and collateral with the National Office, including working with the Content and Celebrity & Entertainment teams at Make-A-Wish America. Serve as chapter liaison on joint projects with National.

Digital marketing and branding

  • Oversee digital marketing campaigns, including creating timelines, plans, and creative content—consult with key stakeholders and report on performance.
  • Produce and distribute all chapter email communications and work with our database team and the National Office to manage email lists.
  • Maintain website including performing a regular audit of content, adding new content and pages, liaising with the National Office on guidelines and updates, and tracking and reporting using Google Analytics and other metrics.
  • Assist with digital advertising campaigns—contributing content, configuring ad parameters, and tracking conversions.
  • Oversee social media channels, including editing and approving posts, contributing content, and tracking KPIs.

Requirements
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to produce compelling marketing content in adherence to deadlines and accordance with brand standards
  • Must be customer-service oriented, a team-player, and open to collaboration on a wide range of projects
  • Occasional evening and weekend commitments required
  • Ability to drive/get access to transportation to reach occasional offsite work activities
Education & Experience
  • 4+ years in marketing, communications, journalism and/or PR
  • BA or equivalent
  • Nonprofit storytelling experience strongly preferred
  • Experience working with a nationally recognized brand preferred
  • Experience with marketing KPIs, including email performance, web analytics, digital advertising and social media metrics
  • Strong knowledge of mass e-mail tools and production; experience with Marketing Cloud a plus
  • Experience with digital advertising including Meta and Google ads preferred
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or other CRM software a plus
