Best Wishes Summer/Spring 2023: CEO's Message

What wishes reveal

Here at Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area, we often talk about the hope and joy that wishes bring to children with critical illnesses. But there’s a third gift that we perhaps don’t acknowledge as much as we should, and that is strength. Wishes bring hope, strength, and joy to children at a time they really need all three.

What are some of the ways a wish can give a child additional strength and the motivation to face their challenges and fight their illness with renewed determination? If you read the stories in this issue, you’ll discover a few. And I guarantee you’ll be awestruck by these talented wish kids, the audacity of their dreams, and their tenacity in the pursuit of them.

A wish can bring a renewed sense of control, increased emotional resilience, and an expanded support network. It can also open up a journey of self-discovery for wish kids, allowing them to learn more about themselves and what they’re capable of achieving and becoming. The impact of a wish extends far beyond the moment, offering a lasting reminder of what is possible when you believe in yourself and the people around you.

We know children with critical illnesses are strong—they have to be in order to face enormous medical challenges, every day. Wishes provide a much-needed space to discover, grow, and celebrate that existing strength. A wish reminds a child: "You can do this!" and "We’ve got you!"

Thank you for being such a strong support system for our wish kids and their families. I hope you enjoy reading about your incredible impact in the pages that follow.

Warmly,

Betsy Biern
