8,000th wish: Francesca's family trip

The wish

When Francesca was a teenager, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. During her intensive chemotherapy treatment, Francesca’s younger sister, Isabella, was right by her side. Isabella would help take care of Francesca, making her lunch every day and ensuring that Francesca took her medication.

Francesca had always dreamed of visiting Barcelona before her diagnosis. When Francesca was referred for a wish, her wish turned into a reality in 2017—and also became the 8,000th wish granted by our chapter!

Francesca, her parents, Hossein and Senta, and Isabella spent an action-packed week in Spain. They toured all the beautiful sites and enjoyed the scenic views of Barcelona on a two-day hop-on-and-off tour bus. They visited the Barcelona Cathedral and took in the gorgeous sights of the brilliantly blue Mediterranean Sea, but mostly got to enjoy a vacation away from her illness.

“We have realized nothing is more important than your family, and you should enjoy it to the fullest because you never know what life is going to throw at you next,” said Francesca’s father, Hossein, after the trip. “Francesca is so happy that a complete stranger could offer her a chance of a lifetime to do something she wanted to do so badly.”

The Celebration

To celebrate 8,000 wishes granted, Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area hosted a private party at the West Wind Capitol Drive-In movie theater in San Jose on July 26, 2017, with a screening of the film Despicable Me. The celebration continued with a party at the Arnold field in Sonoma on August 12, 2017. Francesca was the guest of honor and spoke about the impact of her wish. Wish families joined in on the celebration and enjoyed dinner donated by Mary’s Pizza Shack before watching the Sonoma Stompers’ baseball game—wish kids featured in the game as bat boys and girls and even threw out the first pitch!
