“I was involved with several charity organizations and events throughout high school and college, so when I saw Make-A-Wish Arizona needed more bilingual volunteers, I thought it was a great opportunity for me to help,” Jael said.  

“Being bilingual gives me an opportunity to relate to the Latino community. I work in public health and I understand why it’s so important to make these connections so we can reach every child in need.” 

Jael experienced one of these unexpected connections with a recent shopping spree for wish kid Jorge.  

"When we arrived at the mall, I realized I went to high school with his aunt! Not only was it a fun day for us to participate in his wish together but such a small world moment,” she said. 

One of Jael’s favorite volunteer memories was revealing a basketball court for wish kid Aiden in his backyard. 

“It was fun to see his excitement while shooting hoops and playing on his court for the first time. After the culmination of all the planning, you can truly see the difference reflected in kids after their wish is granted.” 

Jael, who works as a data analyst, also enjoys being part of wishes because it’s so different from her day job.  

“Make-A-Wish gives me an outlet to work with kids and build relationships,” she continued. "I’ve had airport sendoffs where every family member is flying for the first time, and it’s so meaningful to watch entire families get the chance to do something that otherwise wouldn’t be possible." 

Jael, who has granted more than 30 wishes and is currently working on 11 wishes, encourages anyone interested in volunteering to take advantage of the opportunity. 

When Jael isn’t granting wishes, she enjoys running, hiking and watching soccer. If she could have a wish granted, she would choose to meet the Bayern Munich FC!
