Ryder Races to the Finish

From the time Ryder was 2, he had intermittent pain in his left forearm that would flare up when he was playing, and he would feel a lot of pain.

After many specialist appointments, X-rays, MRIs, and an initial surgery to remove what was thought to be a benign growth, Ryder was diagnosed with a very rare form of soft tissue cancer occurring in about one to three people per million. In February 2019, after radiation treatments, he had a complex surgery to remove the mass, followed by trips back to NY every three months for more tests and scans.

Ryder’s father said, “His wish was the best week of his life. Ryder now has something so memorable to hold onto, to help give him the strength to push forward.” Driver Alex Albon, the Williams Racing Team and Duracell treated Ryder like the most important person at the track. He shadowed Alex the entire practice day, wore a matching racing suit, walked the track and performed warm-up exercises with Alex’s trainer. On race day, Ryder got to watch the race with the whole racing team from inside the garage.

"The team told Ryder that he was Alex’s lucky charm. For a child who at times feels like one of the unlucky ones, this meant everything."
Ryder's father

"For a child who can be very self-conscious about the scar on his arm, this experience really enabled him to forget it all and live in the moment” his father continued.

Ryder now views the excruciating MRI scans that he must continue to endure differently – similar to an F1 driver being inside the cockpit. His father adds, “Instead of being focused on the anxiety, his wish will reframe his thinking. What better way than a race car driver’s constant push to get to the finish line.”

Ryder said, “When I sat in the car, that’s when it hit me – this is amazing! I felt like one of the drivers. Nothing will ever come close to this!”
