Kameron's Winter Connection

Kameron's Winter Connection

Winter the dolphin was an inspiration for 12-year-old Kameron who lost his leg in his battle with osteosarcoma. Watching “Dolphin Tale” was a turning point for him.

He struggled with depression after having his leg amputated. Seeing the injured Winter thrive after receiving a prosthetic tail gave Kameron the strength and hope to accept his new reality.

Back in 2019, he wished to visit Winter because he feels a kinship with the rescued dolphin after learning both their prosthetics were made by the same company. Unfortunately, due to COVID, his wish was put on hold and then Winter passed away. Kameron held strong to his original wish but refocused it to checking in with Winter’s friends and meeting other animals that have overcome the odds.

To make his wish come true, Kameron and his family traveled from Maine to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. He received special treatment from the start with his first-ever limousine ride to the airport. The perks continued with an upgraded hotel room with gorgeous views.

“For a year after he the amputation, he couldn’t look at his scar – he couldn’t look at his leg at all. Dolphin Tale showed him not to be scared of his body. Be proud of what he’s got.”

His adventure at the aquarium was nothing short of amazing. Kameron got up close and personal with Winter’s friends including other dolphins that overcame obstacles. And it just happened to be Winter’s birthday! A highlight of his VIP day was interacting with Nicholas, a dolphin that was rescued more than 20 years ago. He got drenched with water, the result of playful dolphin splashing. While in Florida, Kameron and his family also explored SeaWorld and Busch Gardens.

Kameron’s father said, “This trip has been very good for all of us. There have been surprises everywhere. My kids will definitely remember this for a lifetime. It will be something that they will tell their kids about.”
