Ahmad's Wish
In September, a new teammate joined the Philadelphia Union. Courageous, resilient, enthusiastic, and with a smile that lights up the field, Subaru Park welcomed Ahmad, a 13-year-old soccer-loving kid who has the heart of a champion.
Battling a blood disorder throughout his life, soccer has been the source of immense joy for Ahmad.
With soccer being Ahmad’s favorite sport, his wish, a milestone 8,00th wish granted by Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, was to have a Major League Soccer (MLS) experience.
The Philadelphia Union made that wish come true by signing Ahmad to a one-day contract with his hometown team, providing an extraordinary soccer experience for an extraordinary kid.
Ahmad arrived by limousine at the Union facility accompanied by his family, his greatest teammates, right beside him. Ahmad was introduced to Union players and enjoyed a meal with his new teammates before receiving his training uniform.
Afterwards, it was time to make things official. Ahmad signed his one-day contract and received his team jersey, number 23.
From team film sessions, exercises in the training room, participating in drills on the field, to being on the sidelines with Head Coach Jim Curtin, Ahmad experienced firsthand the day in the life of a professional soccer player.
Curtin reflected on having Ahmad spend the day with the organization, and the impact Ahmad brought to his players.
“To have Ahmad in with our group was really special. His smile was infectious for our guys,” said Coach Curtin. “It’s been a special day and it’s been awesome to share some memories with him.”
Ahmad and his family returned to Subaru Park for the Union’s matchup vs.FC Dallas. From pregame handshakes and hugs to participating in the first-kick ceremony, Ahmad was front and center cheering on his team throughout the match.
To cap off the night, the Union had one more special thing in store for Ahmad and his family-2024 Union season tickets.
It was an unforgettable experience on the pitch for Ahmad- filled with laughs, soccer balls, and lots of spirit.
Although the match ended in a 1-1 draw, the Union earned the greatest victory of all-having Ahmad as their teammate.
While Ahmad inspired the Union organization, the experience with Make-A-Wish and Philadelphia Union simultaneously inspired Ahmad to believe that more joyful days like these are just around the corner.
“It was fun,” said Ahmad. “It’s probably going to be my best year yet.”
