When Lucas was just 3 years old, he had a liver and small intestine transplant. Because of the critical nature of his illness, he was able to qualify for Make-A-Wish.  

Lucas’ original wish was to say “Gentleman, start your engines!” at a NASCAR race, something he loved as a kid. The itinerary was set and his family was ready to go, but suddenly something stood in their way - the September 11 attacks had cancelled all sporting events nationwide, and because it was the end of the racing season, their trip couldn’t be postponed to a different race.

Much like the kids who have reimagined their wishes during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lucas and his family decided it was time to switch gears and rework his wish. Just a few months later, him and his family spent a week at Walt Disney World in Florida, meeting his favorite characters, riding all the rides, and spending time together as a family away from the doctors and hospitals.
