Justin's Wish Play-By-Play
With the help of CBS Sports, 15-year-old Justin had his wish granted to watch his favorite sports announcer, Kevin Harlan, commentate live! After his lifelong battle with non-compactive cardiomyopathy, Justin had a VIP experience at the Kansas City Chiefs v. Miami Dolphins game at the Hard Rock Stadium in early October.
At around 3 years old, Justin would complain of chest pain, even when idle. The family did not suspect any heart-related concern until Justin had an allergic reaction to a tree nut at age 12 and his heart rate skyrocketed. After being seen by a number of cardiologists, Justin was diagnosed with non-compactive cardiomyopathy.
Justin got to spend the evening before the big game meeting Kevin Harlan and some of the CBS Sports crew as they prepare ahead of a game. The next morning, the wish family rode in a limo to the stadium where he was immediately greeted with Dolphins swag. He was welcomed into the TV Compound, where the CBS crew showed Justin their setup and screens, explaining their functions. He asked questions about how they manage so many angles and communicating with one another, which everyone was happy to answer.
Justin got to meet Dolphins players during their pre-game practice, as well as watch CBS Sports Journalist Melanie Collins interview Patrick Mahomes on the sideline. Just before kickoff, the family went into the broadcast booth where Justin and Kevin were reunited. For the duration of the game, Justin sat behind the broadcaster and watched them call play, and was even given a headset to listen in.
I know this is something he could do for the rest of his life.
Since he was 5 years old, Justin has always loved all kinds of sports. His mother, Tina, attests that he grew up a naturally talented athlete, playing hockey, soccer, and basketball. However, over time, Justin had to stop playing competitive sports, and eventually, even non-competitive sports when he realized it made his heart-rate spike.
He found a way to continue engaging with sports through sports commentating. He sits on the couch and comment on hockey, basketball, and lacrosse games. This wish gave him clear insight into his growing passion and career aspiration.
Thank you to the crews of CBS Sports, the Miami Dolphins, and the Kansas City Chiefs for helping grant Justin’s wish!
