Rosie Heals with the Wild
Rosie is a 12-year-old girl from Oregon with a very unique wish to be an exotic animal vet!
Rosie has been courageously battling congenital heart disease since birth. Throughout her life, she has undergone four open-heart surgeries, as well as 13 additional procedures.
For years now, one of Rosie’s favorite pastimes has become watching reruns of her favorite show that is no longer airing—Dr. K's Exotic Animal ER. Rosie flew in from her home state of Oregon with her parents and brothers to shadow Dr. Susan Kelleher, better known as Dr. K, at her veterinary practice at local Broward Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital.
Rosie had a blast watching Dr. K care for animals such as rabbits, parrots, and turtles. The practice specializes in exotic species, including birds, reptiles, rodents, fish, and primates, which captured Rosie’s attention even more than the usual dogs and cats.
Just before our wish trip, Rosie told me, ‘Finally something good comes out of having a heart condition.’

In just one day, Rosie not only had the opportunity to shadow Dr. K, but she also formed a close and playful bond with her favorite veterinarian. The two connected over their shared love of animals, laughter, and similar life experiences. Their energy together was infectious!
Rosie finds comfort watching animals in need of care improve their conditions with the help of veterinary medicine. It serves as a pleasant reminder of the necessity of her multiple surgeries and medical treatments.
Another aspect of Rosie’s wish that brought her comfort was bonding with her idol, Dr. K, over their surgical scars. It was a moment that made her realize she is far from the only person with a complex medical history.
Thank you to Dr. K and the Broward Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital staff for graciously hosting Rosie for her epic wish!
