A Place Just for David: A Wish Rooted in Hope
David’s journey began during one of the most uncertain times in recent history. Born in April 2020, at the very start of the COVID-19 pandemic, his first months of life were filled with virtual appointments and unanswered questions. It wasn’t until his first in-person visit that his doctor immediately recognized the urgency. David was rushed to Sanford Children’s Hospital, where he received a life-saving blood transfusion. Soon after, David was officially diagnosed with a respiratory disorder, a progressive genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. Because his pancreas was impacted, David wasn’t absorbing nutrients properly and was experiencing what doctors call “failure to thrive.”
For David’s parents, Emily and Josh, the diagnosis was overwhelming. “It was scary at first,” Emily shared.
But we’ve learned to take it one day at a time, because the future is not in our control.

While admitted, David and his family met his care team, including his pulmonologist, Dr. James Wallace, whom Emily describes as incredible. They walked the family through every step and have continued to support them along the way. Although David’s health has greatly improved, his family still prays for a cure every single day. It was Dr. Wallace who later referred David to Make-A-Wish.
When David met with his wish‑granting volunteers, his vision was clear. He knew exactly what he wanted. With deep farm roots, David dreamed of a playhouse that looked like a barn. He had the specifics all figured out: a slide to race down, and inside, tool and kitchen playsets so he could fix, build, and cook just like he’d seen at home. It wasn’t just a playhouse — it was a space where his imagination could run free.
As wish day approached, excitement filled the air, even if David didn’t quite know it yet. Emily admits to a small “white lie,” telling David that the cement being poured in their yard was for a farm shed. On wish day, she covered his eyes as they pulled into the driveway, keeping the surprise intact.
The reveal was everything they hoped for.
For us as parents, we want to protect our kids from the fears and worries that come with their disease.
“So for him to have a place where he doesn’t have a care in the world means everything.”
David’s playhouse quickly became his favorite place. Whether he’s fixing things, cooking, swinging in his cocoon swing, or racing down the slide, it’s a space that belongs just to him; a place where imagination runs wild and joy comes easily.
Today, David lights up every time he looks out the dining room window and sees his playhouse waiting. After school, chores can’t end fast enough before he’s back outside, playing and laughing. And for Emily and her family, that happiness means the world.
Wishes like David’s do more than create a single joyful moment. Wishes bring hope, change perspectives, and remind wish kids that they are seen and supported through some of their toughest days.
“There isn’t a single wish kid who doesn’t crack a smile on their wish day,” Emily shared. “You can feel the joy just looking at the photos.”
David’s wish was made even more special by the people behind it. His playhouse was built by a wish father, a family David’s family has known for years. Seeing one wish family give back to another brought the experience full circle and left a lasting impact.
“Without donors and WishMakers, none of this would be possible,” Emily said.
We are reminded every day not only of David’s wish, but of the people who made it happen!
David’s story is a powerful reminder of why wishes matter and how, together, a community can give a child something priceless: joy, hope, and the freedom to simply be a kid.
