Michael’s Wish Takes Flight in New York City
At just eight years old, Michael already sees the world through the lens of possibility. He loves to build, create, and understand how things work — especially when it comes to technology. Michael’s interest in drones started early. He’s fascinated by how they’re used in real-life situations, like by police departments or at major sporting events. While he had flown small drones at home, Michael dreamed of learning how professionals use advanced equipment. When asked about his future, flying drones is something he hopes to do one day as a career.
In August 2023, Michael and his family’s world changed. What began as a mild fever during the first week of school quickly escalated. After two severe nosebleeds in one day, Michael was taken to the emergency room, where lab work revealed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The doctors moved fast — blood transfusions, surgery for a bone marrow aspirate and port placement, and chemotherapy all began within 24 hours.
For the next nine months, Michael underwent intensive treatment, with frequent hospital visits multiple times a week. Despite the sudden diagnosis and demanding schedule, Michael’s spirit remained strong. His love for learning and imagining the future never faded.
Michael’s wish to fly a drone with the New York City Police Department gave him something powerful to look forward to. During his wish, he stepped away from hospital rooms and into a world that reflected his dreams. He worked with real equipment, learned from experts, and saw how his passion could exist beyond treatment and appointments.
For Michael, this wish wasn’t just about drones or travel — it was about hope, confidence, and seeing a future filled with possibility. It reminded him that even in the midst of a difficult journey, his dreams still matter and can still take flight.
