Twelve-year-old Mason lives with a respiratory disorder, but that doesn’t stop him from diving into his passions, especially his love for marine animals and all things ocean-related. So, when he learned that he was being granted a wish, he knew exactly what he wanted: to be a marine biologist and experience the wonders of ocean life firsthand.
Mason’s wish trip began at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, where he explored hands-on exhibits and got up close with live marine animals. The next day, he visited the Marine Biology Department at Savannah State University. There, he learned how to identify phytoplankton, detect microplastics in sand, and his favorite part- naming and mapping dolphins.
But the excitement didn’t end there! Mason was thrilled to hop aboard the university’s research boat to get an up-close and personal view of what it’s like to be a marine biologist- he even got to captain the boat (with some professional supervision, of course!)
On the final day of his wish trip, Mason and his family visited the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. He spent the day shadowing a veterinarian, learning all about sea turtle care, from preparing food and cleaning enclosures to providing medical treatments.
We are incredibly thankful to Savannah State University and our supporters for helping make Mason’s wish a truly unforgettable experience!
