Oliver Builds Hope

Oliver battles a rare gastrointestinal disorder that requires multiple surgeries and extended hospitalizations.

During the challenging times, Oliver passes the time by learning about and playing with all sorts of trucks, especially ones that work on construction sites. He can identify the names and functions of each vehicle better than most adults. His favorite is the digger (excavator)!

When his volunteer wish granters came for a visit, Oliver led them straight to his playroom which is jam packed with construction vehicles. There was no doubt that his greatest wish was to visit a construction site and sit in a real excavator!

On his wish day, Oliver was thrilled to live out his workplace dream as an assistant on two different sites, participating in actual construction activities, and experiencing the power and enormity of the vehicles he’s only seen up close in toy versions.

Construction vehicles are one of Oliver’s little obsessions and he just absolutely loves them. This is an incredible experience, something you would never in your lifetime imagine.

He and his family arrived to his first jobsite in style – in a chauffeur-driven limousine. He received his own work boots, PPE, an ID badge, and a checklist of the day’s tasks. There was a safety orientation and then he was cleared to enter the Finker-Frenkel Wish House while it was still under construction. He even left his handprint in a wall that will be a permanent piece of WishWorks, a special interactive space that only wish kids will be able to experience at the start of their wish journey.

His perfect day continued at a construction site in Miami Beach where he assisted the workers, rode in a crane and looked over blueprints with the team.

Oliver’s mother said, “This experience is just beyond me. It was amazing to watch him and see his face light up. He’s never going to forget this.”
