When Aubrey Kennedy was four years old, she was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor and underwent surgery to remove a kidney. While most children her age were focused on playgrounds and picture books, Aubrey and her family were navigating treatments, hospital visits and the uncertainty that comes with a serious diagnosis.

At age five, Aubrey received her wish: a trip to Disney World. For a little girl who loved Disney princesses, especially Sleeping Beauty, and adored Stitch, it was a dream come true.

But nearly two decades later, the rides and attractions are not what stand out most in her memory.

What Aubrey remembers is the joy.

"It's really nice to be able to look back at that time and have a happy, fun experience rather than just being like, 'I had cancer,'" she said. 

For Aubrey, the wish was more than a trip to Disney World. Looking back now, she realizes its greatest impact wasn't just the experience itself. It gave her a different way to remember a difficult time in her life. Rather than allowing her diagnosis to define that chapter, the wish created memories of joy, excitement and possibility, memories she still carries with her today and now shares with other wish families facing similar challenges. 

The impact of Aubrey's wish is still being felt today.

Inspired by their experience, Aubrey's family has spent years helping create hope for other children. Through Swim to a Wish, a fundraising event started by her father, they have helped raise more than $360,000 for wish families over the past 15 years.

For Aubrey, the most meaningful part is connecting with other families facing challenges similar to the ones her family once faced. Through those conversations, she can offer encouragement, share her own story and serve as a reminder that there is life beyond diagnosis and treatment.

Today, Aubrey's story is a testament to the lasting power of hope. The little girl who wished for Disney World grew up to help other families find light during some of their darkest days. And nearly two decades later, the greatest impact of her wish isn't the trip itself. It's the ripple effect that continues to inspire connection, generosity and hope for others.
