Nick's Wish to go to Egypt

When Nick’s wish granting volunteers met him and his family in 2007, his parents were as surprised as they were to learn his wish! Nick wished to go to Egypt and had plenty of interesting facts about the country to show how interested he was. Still, his parents told the volunteers that they should check back in a few weeks, just in case his wish and interest in Egypt had changed.

But it didn’t. And Egypt would prove to be a long-lasting inspiration for Nick’s life.

Over the next few weeks, Nick brought home books from school and asked his parents to record any shows that were about Egypt. When his wish granting volunteers returned and asked him what four things he’d like to do if he went to Egypt, Nick didn’t miss a beat. “I want to see the pyramids, see a real mummy, ride a camel and oh, yeah, I want to dig in Egypt!”

We believed the wish was going to be fantastic, but we were not prepared for just how fantastic it would be!

On his wish trip, Nick’s hotel room had a view of the Great Pyramid. He traveled to an archaeological dig site with an Egyptian Guide and even was allowed to dig using real archaeological tools. There, Nick sifted for beads that were from a necklace of a real pyramid builder.

There was more in store for Nick including a private tour of King Tutankhamun's tomb. He even got to dig in the Valley of Kings – his parents had to watch from the Director’s office, as this was a secure digging site.

And so, for our family this wish has changed our lives.

“Children make wishes every day. Make-A-Wish turns those wishes into realities. They may not realize it but that trip fulfilled the wishes of three people. There is no greater wish for a parent than to see your child’s wish come true!” Terry wrote a year after Nick’s wish.

Nick is now twenty and while he was first introduced to pottery on his trip to Egypt, it is still a major part of his life. When Nick got home he joined Boy Scouts and began to pursue a pottery merit badge. He worked hard and he got really good at it.

Nick has decided to pursue a career as a potter. He spends three days a week creating pottery for his shop The Art Walk Shop and Studio in downtown Winthrop, and the rest of the time he works in the store, helping customers and coordinating with approximately 30 other artists who contribute to the store.

Nick has big plans for the future. He's currently working to finish the studio space beneath the shop and he wants to offer pottery classes there and allow other artists to hold classes in the space.

Every wish has an impact, and some have an impact that shapes a wish child’s life in an unexpected way.
