Sam's Wish to Ski in the French Alps

In February of 2020, Sam’s wish to ski in the French Alps came true. Make-A-Wish Iowa sent Sam and his family to visit Chamonix, France and the French Alps.

Sam’s parents remember the feelings created as his wish grew closer, “In the months leading up to our trip, we were so excited about going on such an amazing adventure to fulfill Sam's wish, skiing in the Alps. The anticipation brought us so much joy.”

Sam and his family were not only given the opportunity to experience uninterrupted family time but also able to ski at four different areas around Chamonix and even take lessons from an instructor who used to be on the French national ski team. They enjoyed a gondola ride up to one of the highest points in Europe and spent time enjoying the French alpine culture.

His parents particularly note the time his wish gave them as a family, “We had so much wonderful time bonding as a family on the trip. During our travel, in the hotel, at meals, walking around town, and while skiing. The kids' phones went away for a few days and they didn't even ask for them. This time together experiencing another culture and having fun was truly a gift.”

“Sam said a couple of times that his wish "to ski in a really cool place in Europe" not only came true but was exceeded in many ways.”

Wishes have an incredible impact on children and families who receive them. Sam’s parents said, “It cannot be overstated how another blessing of the trip is that it will forever be tied to Sam and his condition. Until now, Sam's epilepsy has largely been associated with stress, uncertainty, restrictions, paperwork, etc. Not long ago we found a solution with the help of Sam's neurologist that virtually ended 13 years of uncontrolled seizures for him. That brought us all hope, joy and prayerful thanks. Similarly, this trip has brought us an immense amount of joy. From planning for the trip to everything we did on it, to reflecting on it by looking at photos and talking about it at the dinner table. We are so grateful for the trip and the joy it has brought our family.”
