Joey's Story

I wish to spend time in the backyard with my family

Joey’s wish was to have a swing that he could enjoy with his family. An accident when Joey was 18 months old resulted in a nervous system disorder and other complications that left him confined to a wheelchair. The accident and his health condition dramatically changed his life forever. Joey is now 15 and while he can communicate through a tablet and with smiles and gestures, his condition limits his universe primarily to his home and local community.

When our team learned of Joey’s wish for a swing, we went to work to grant this unique wish for a special teen. A wish to have a swing that could accommodate his wheelchair. really exciting to him and his family. We found a perfect adaptive swing that includes sunscreens and seats for family and friends so they all could spend time together outside. Swings also provide motion therapy which is very soothing and calming for children with health issues like Joey. Wish mom shared that this beautiful swing has made a huge difference in Joey's world and is something he and his family will enjoy all year long. The smile on his face says it all.

Wishes come together with the help of the community and we had lots of help in granting this wish. The Simi Valley Sunset Rotary Foundation and an anonymous donor provided generous donations to make this wish come true. Our team worked with local vendors and volunteers to build and install the swing including Chad of Iron by Chad. Dedicated volunteer Wish Granters made wish reveal day even more exciting and fun by providing special gifts and accessories to add to his outdoor experience along with a beautiful cake and balloons to add to the celebration. We are so grateful for the support we received in granting this - and all of our wishes!
