When Olivia Stern became severely ill in seventh grade, she thought she had the flu. She stayed home from school for a week and had a 103.8-degree fever. Olivia wasn’t getting better, so she went to the emergency room at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton. After some tests, the medical team suspected Olivia may not have the flu, so she went with her family to Children’s Wisconsin in Milwaukee. There, she underwent a bone marrow biopsy. Olivia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2014, a common type of leukemia among children that targets blood and bone marrow.

April is World Wish Month, a global movement of wish granting in honor of the founding wish and the creation of Make-A-Wish. In Wisconsin, our state’s chapter is celebrating an anniversary year with a milestone wish.

Make-A-Wish Wisconsin said recently that president and CEO Patti Gorsky has announced that she will retire in early 2025.

In 2024, Make-A-Wish is celebrating 40 years in Wisconsin. That’s 40 years of hope and joy to thousands of kids in need. The cold and ice of a Wisconsin winter doesn’t bother Kaelynn Brickner. "I like the snow," the 16-year-old said. "Because I like going snowmobiling and all of that. "I’m very excited to go to 80 degrees for a week," said Nicole Brickner, Kaelynn's mom. "Instead of, you know, 10."

The Milwaukee Bucks fulfilled the wishes of several Make-A-Wish kids after practice on Friday, Dec. 15. The children and their families watched practice and then had an opportunity to meet the players.

Nearly 500 children are diagnosed with a critical illness each year in Wisconsin, and one organization has dedicated 40 years to helping them and their families while spreading messages of hope and inspiration.

Among the thousands going to see WWE Smackdown at Fiserv Forum Friday night included a Milwaukee Boy who wished to see one of the professional wrestlers.

Disney's Aladdin is in town, just for the week, at the Marcus Performing Arts Center. A portion of each ticket sold is benefiting the Wisconsin Make-A-Wish Foundation. Parents and a dozen children got to be here for this special invitation. Their stories may be different, but when you talk to them, you hear one thing in common: they've battled and have come out on the other side stronger.

The annual Make-A-Wish "Walk For Wishes" returned to Milwaukee's Henry Maier Festival Park Saturday morning, Sept. 9. The walk raises money, of course, but it is also a place for families to share their stories.
