After one glimpse of WWE® Superstar John Cena®’s unyielding and unflinching courage in action, Alan was hooked. “Every time somebody challenges him, he never backs down,” Alan says.
But Alan was about to face the biggest challenge of his life. After an ultrasound
of a bump on his shoulder, Alan was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma – a life-threatening medical condition. He needed chemotherapy. Most importantly he needed to strong and stay positive.
While in contact with Make-A-Wish® volunteers, Alan channeled Cena’s fighting spirit and beat his illness into submission in just three months.
In celebration of his victory, Alan’s one true wish was to meet the Superstar icon who inspired him.
Alan is soon on his way to the airport via limo for a short flight to Dallas for a WWE Monday Night Raw event. But first wish granters drop him off at a GameStop® store in the local mal
l to play some video games. While Alan is engrossed in a game, Cena casually walks up and joins him for a few rounds of Smackdown Vs. Raw 2009.
“He started stretching,” Alan says, laughing. “It was really funny!”
Cena – who lost a few matches to this teenage wish kid – signs his hat and hands it to Alan. GameStop also rewards Alan for his victory with a backpack filled with video games, t-shirt and a GameStop hat. With these cool gifts the tough pair are off to Monday Night Raw.
Before the Raw action, Alan meets Superstars Shawn Michaels and Jeff Hardy. Cena joins them carrying more signed souvenirs for Alan – dog tags, wristbands, shirts, etc.
Even though Cena lost to The Big Show that night, Alan still believed in him, accurately predicting his favorite Superstar would win at Wrestlemania.
Now, Alan looks to the future knowing that after his medical triumph nothing else will stand in his way.
Like Alan, John Cena inspires all wish kids he meets to “Never Give Up” giving them hope and strength to overcome any hurdle. Cena and the WWE continue to partner with the Make-A-Wish team through events and fundraisers to share the power of wish®.
