Nobody knew why Dhanush was sick. But Dr. Carmen Weeber-Morse was determined to find out.
The tests she ordered and the specialists she contacted were the first steps in saving Dhanush’s life. It gave him the chance to overcome severe chronic neutropenia, a rare illness that had confounded ever other medical professional who’d examined Dhanush.
Dhanush survived. Today, Dr. Weeber-Morse keeps in touch with him, even after he moved from Ohio to California. Their relationship started with his Make-A-Wish® experience. He knows her actions saved his life. He asked Make-A-Wish volunteers to reunite him with Dr. Weeber-Morse so he could show her the impact of her care. Make-A-Wish volunteers say Dr. Weeber-Morse has tears in her eyes when they told her about Dhanush’s wish.
The local media watched as the two greeted each other for the first time in years. Dhanush gave Dr. Weeber-Morse a Best Doctor award … his own spin on an Academy Award. He also gave her a digital camera so they could take photos of their reunion.
Her role in Dhanush’s wish is a constant reminder for Dr. Weeber-Morse: Her work changes lives – and can even inspire kindness in others. Dhanush found a role model in his doctor – and she found a patient that she can look up to.
