Balian's Wish to Have a Gaming Room

He had just started middle school and was beginning to experience what a little more freedom was like.

Balian’s diagnosis stripped this newfound independence away from him. His medical journey wasn’t gradual. It was abrupt. He went from the first tastes of freedom to practically no control over his life, and for Balian and his family, it was tough. To give himself a stronger sense of control, Balian stopped eating and even went mute.  

When Balian learned about Make-A-Wish, he knew right away that he wanted a wish that would include his brother. At first, he wanted to take a trip to Walt Disney World, but after a surgery intended to save his leg, he decided that him and his brother wanted a wish that he could fully enjoy. 

Balian wished for a gaming room.  

Balian’s gaming room gave him a wish that was continuous and would give him and his family memories for years. It gave him a safe space where he was in control. No one can poke him or tell him what to do. This is a place where Balian can come home, relax and forget about the hospital for a little bit. 

Balian’s family spends a lot of time in his gaming room. It allows them to focus on each other and having fun. It brings them closer together.  

Make-A-Wish has the unique ability to transform a child and family’s life during some of their most difficult trials – as a wish creates an opportunity for hope and the ability to experience life beyond illness. A wish is not simply a wish. In the fight against a critical illness, each wish serves as a catalyst for renewed strength and encouragement for every child and family on their journey. 

Balian recently had his leg amputated and is doing well. He’s very funny and curious, and he’s a very deep thinker. His mother is working with him to find more ways to gain control of what’s going on in his life, starting with endless memories in the gaming room.
