Why Kim donates monthly after her son's wish experience
Kim decided to become a monthly donor after the happiness her son experienced during his wish and she believes you don’t have to give a lot to make a difference.
“People think that their contribution needs to be something big, but a recurring donation adds up," she said. "I don’t have a lot, but if you can find a way to give a small amount every month, you’ll never miss it.”
Kim donates to Make-A-Wish because she has seen the power of a wish first-hand. In 2019, her son Collin received his wish to spend a week at a beach house in California.
“When Collin was 16 years old, being the center of attention was the last thing he wanted, but that’s what happens when you get cancer,” she said. “For his wish, he just wanted to ‘chill out’ and his wish was a great way for him to reset and enjoy some normalcy and quality time with our family.
"Other kids who have to go through the things Collin went through should get to feel the happiness he felt on his wish. Wishes really make a difference not only for the wish kid, but also for the family.”
Today, Collin is cancer-free and studying business at Arizona State University. Kim decided she and her family would help future wish kids feel the happiness Collin felt on his wish, which is why she became a monthly donor.
“I like that I know where my donation is going and the money stays local, plus I’m still in touch with many of the cancer kids and families we met in the hospital and I love to see how unique each of their wishes are and what they choose.
“Even in hard times, knowing that I’m helping the girl or boy down the street, at my local hospital, or at my child’s school makes a huge difference to me,” she continued.
