Tehya grew up believing she could accomplish anything, regardless of her medical condition. She overcame her physical challenges to become a cheerleader, gymnast and swimmer.
Maybe it was that positive outlook that made her hesitate before accepting a Make-A-Wish experience when referred at the age of 12. Tehya thought she might be taking a wish from someone else who needed it more. Then she figured out a way to help others through her wish, and she knew the time was right.
Tehya told wish granters that she had visions of a 5k run/run event that would be open to people of all physical abilities. Teyha saw her wish come to life at the inaugural Tehyathon. Participants of all abilities signed up, and local athletes and musicians stepped forward to spread the word and add their talents. The event raised funds to boost awareness of her medical condition, and also to help homeless people in her community. It also lifted the spirits of everyone who attended. Tehya watched all the participants enjoy a mini-carnival, food trucks and entertainment. Most of all, she discovered how it feels to be the inspiration for an event that could bring others together on a scale she never imagined before.
Today, Tehya continues her mission to raise awareness and funds to help others. She continues to describe her life as an unexpected journey, but she also credits her medical obstacles for molding her character.
And Tehya continues to rely on her self-belief to help others find something encouraging in their lives.
