RyAnne’s Colorful Playroom

RyAnne wished for a colorful playroom

RyAnne has experienced more than 80 bone fractures. Last year, RyAnne began to imagine her perfect play space: a room in her house that was fitted just for her to enjoy safely, but vibrant like her personality.

Volunteers at Make-A-Wish Alaska and Washington took a look at RyAnne’s playroom design plan and went to work. A ton of color, polka-dotted walls, a rolling desk filled with art supplies, a foam pit and a therapy swing were among her requests.

RyAnne’s volunteer, Laura, was amazed by how much thought RyAnne had given to her wish and was touched by RyAnne’s personality. “She is full of spunk and has a can-do attitude, and her giggle will make anyone giggle along with her,” Laura said. On the weekend of the big transformation, RyAnne and her family spent the day in Seattle together where they ate dinner at the Space Needle, explored the Pacific Science Center and Seattle Aquarium, and spent the night at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel. Meanwhile, RyAnne’s volunteers were hard at work.

RyAnne’s vision for her playroom design came to life with a custom desk filled with art supplies and crafts, a foam pit filled with balloons, multi-colored, polka-dotted walls and a reading nook with books and pillows.

When RyAnne and her family arrived for the big surprise, members of the local high school band gathered at the home playing music in RyAnne’s honor.

RyAnne saw her new room for the first time and had no hesitation to check out every bit of it. She opened her desk drawers, laughed from her swing, threw balloons from her foam pit and, finally, refused to leave her room even to eat lunch.

“We’re so thankful and we just appreciate everything,” said RyAnne’s mom, Stephanie. “The whole process from beginning to end was just amazing—beyond our expectations.”

It took many volunteers and community members to come to together to make RyAnne’s wish a reality. As RyAnne’s dad, Jason, said, “They built it with their hearts.”

With her new and safe playroom, RyAnne can enjoy all stages of her healing, without ever leaving home.
