It started with a toy drum set. Ben, then 3 years old, played the toy drums until they fell apart.
Now Ben sits behind a Pearl Masterworks kit – one of the renowned drum company’s flagship kits. Sticks in-hand, feet on the high-hat and bass pedals, a smile on his face … it’s a perfect day for Ben, who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma when he was 17.
He told Make-A-Wish® volunteers that his wish was to have a Pearl drum kit. Ben learned about a year ago that his wish would come true. He spent more than an hour talking with a Pearl technician to plan the perfect kit – from the emerald-fade color to the ply of the drum shells.
The day to receive his wish arrives. Employees at the Nashville facility give him a tour. He learns about his favorite drum company … its roster of artists, the gold and platinum records hanging on the walls, its origins in a 300-square-foot factory in Japan. Ben even enjoys a Skype chat with celebrity Pearl artist Horacio Hernandez, one of his favorite drummers.
Ben’s wish experience is more than just an incredible drum kit that he’ll enjoy every day: It’s the inspiration to look beyond each day of medical treatment and recovery, a glimpse into life after cancer.
