Alicia's Hot Tub Therapy

Alicia and her mom

“Alicia’s Make-A-Wish® experience has not only filled her with joy, but has also brought smiles to everyone around her.”

Alicia relaxes in the warm water as her arms and legs regain some flexibility. Her mom, Kelly, helps her kick her legs in the water – a good source of therapy and a lot of fun.

Nine-year-old Alicia’s genetic disorder, methylmalonic academia, causes development delays, among other things. As such, Alicia is unable to speak, so socializing isn’t easy. But when Marquis Spas® help the Make-A-Wish® Oregon team grant Alicia’s hot tub wish, Alicia is surrounded by pals and laughter as they all join in the fun at the hottest pool party in town.

It’s the perfect present just before Christmas.

Alicia’s wish granters surprise her with toys for the hot tub as well; including, a battery- operated clown fish - often found swimming next to her.  Alicia combines her therapeutic spa time with some of her other favorite activities – such as listening to her Veggie Tales CDs or playing with her older brother.

In an article from the Salem (Ore.) Statesman Journal, Alicia’s mom notes that when Alicia is in her hot tub she “just laughs and laughs…” Alicia’s Make-A-Wish® experience has not only filled her with joy, but has also brought smiles to everyone around her.

Alicia is the 200th recipient of a hot tub donated by Marquis Spas through its "In the Spirit of the Wish" campaign as they help to share the power of a wish®.

I have a nephew who has several medical problems similar to Alicia's, and so I am glad to see such a miracle happen for this wondeful little girl, A hot tub may just be a hot tub for some people, but for people like Alicia and my nephew it can change thier lives. Thanks to Make-A-Wish and all Make-A-Wish supporters.

Reading this little girls story reminded me of my own little brother. He has Down Syndrome and Autism and cannot speak either, but when he is in water, like the pool, he feels so free and laughs uncontrollably. It brought tears to my eyes reading Alicia's story. I'm happy she got her wish, and I hope she continues to have loads of fun in her hot tub!

Alicia, thank you so much. By sharing your wish with us, you helped us decide our wish for our daughter Sophia. She has very high tone and loves warm water. She'll get so much more use out of this than a trip. Thanks sweetie, enjoy you hot tub!

Hello Alicia, my name is Amanda. When I was 10 I was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor and had a wish granted by Make-A-Wish. I wished for the same thing you did, a hot tub! I just thought that this was cool and wanted you to know. I hope you are doing fine, I'm in remission myself. Good luck! -Amanda

What a doll baby. Even though she can't speak with words to hear, her laughter must say more than a thousand words. Such a simple yet fulflling wish!
