Shelby’s wish experience did more than change her life – it motivated her to change the lives of others.
Her wish came true in 2002. Shelby was 14 … and too weak to wash her own hair. Even worse, she couldn’t find the energy to create art. She could barely lift her paintbrush. After Shelby wished to go to Paris, she had something to anticipate. The thought of getting away from home to experience something new invigorated her.
The lasting result of her wish goes further than great memories of the Sainte Chapelle. The real impact is how the Make-A-Wish® experience encouraged Shelby to help others. She has raised more than $35,000 for Make-A-Wish by selling her paintings. She was an intern at the chapter that granted her wish.
The chance to think about something other than a serious illness was the beginning of a lasting change in her health. She was able to stop taking medication that had been part of her life for 14 years.
“My wish gave me hope for the future,” Shelby says. “It gave me something to look forward to, and a chance to focus on something other than my illness.”
