The jetway seems to stretch forever. Finally, Jordan reaches the open door and the flight attendant. With a quick check of his boarding pass, Jordan is on the way to his seat.
And on the way to Australia, to his one true wish.
“A year earlier, things were a lot different for us,” says Marcia, Jordan’s mother.
The Clock Turns Back
The day Jordan boards the plane marks nearly one year since the discovery of his brain tumor. In one afternoon, he changed from an active kid competing in track and playing soccer to a hospital patient. That entire year, his life was defined by radiation and time away from his family. Marcia spent much of her time with him at the hospital.
Jordan’s world changed for the better one day: He learned that his doctor referred him for a Make-A-Wish® experience. Maybe he’s one of the 89 percent of health professional surveyed who say that a wish can influence a kid’s physical health.
It took little time for Jordan to name his wish: to visit Australia so he can see all the amazing animals Down Under. From that moment, Jordan’s entire family changed: They recognized a chance to re-connect, to make up for all the time spent apart.
Supporters Pitch In
Wish granters use all their skills, creativity and connections for Jordan’s wish. They use United Mileage Plus® frequent flier miles donated by Make-A-Wish supporters to book the flights. Travel consultants from Make-A-Wish sponsor Monograms® Travel craft an itinerary guaranteed to delight him.
During the trip, Marcia watches Jordan encounter all the wildlife he saw on TV and in books – kangaroos, koalas, huge saltwater crocs. At the Venom Zoo in Kuranda, he encounters all that slithers and crawls. He takes photos that become memoirs of his adventures – from the Opera House to the Outback, from the dusty Northern Territory to the dense Queensland rainforest.
Look to the Future
Each landmark puts the stress of the past year further behind them. Jordan’s smile is ever-present – and so is Marcia’s joy at watching her son reclaim his life.
