All parents tell their children stories about life ‘when they were young’, but it usually doesn’t sink in. For Chloe though, her eyes lit up in excitement when she heard her mom’s stories of a 500-year-old family farm in England where her grandparents still resided.
Five-year-old Chloe – born with a congenital heart disease – requires oxygen treatments that make it difficult for air travel, so without the help of Make-A-Wish® volunteers and donors the family farm would have remained in Chloe’s imagination.
Make-A-Wish San Diego set up all the necessary medical arrangements for her care on the flight, with the help an airline pleased to have Chloe and her family onboard.
After a 10-hour flight she arrives safely in London and starts her journey touring the Buckingham Palace while treated like royalty herself. Chloe and her family then venture to other tourist locations: Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and Trafalgar Square with all its pigeons.
“I saw the Queen’s jewels and the changing of the guard,” Chloe recalls. “They were even marching when I came there.”
After becoming an expert in London’s famous attractions, it’s time to reunite with her English family and no longer be a tourist, Chloe and her family takes off to the farm.
Young Chloe, who has struggled through the worry of her treatments, can’t stop smiling as she receives a warm greeting from her relatives in the village of Crackington Haven. She spends time getting to know her grandparents, playing and enjoying “Nannie’s” jam sandwiches and homemade bread. She even shares tea with her grandmother.
Chloe’s wish experience gave her the opportunity to connect with family she wouldn’t have otherwise been able to meet, making memories they will all cherish. Today, Chloe is still elated when she recalls London’s big sights and the little family farm.
