Sterling: President of the United States

Sterling becomes President for a day

“It opened my eyes up ... to make me realize how giving people can be of their time.”

- Sterling's father

Sterling knows what it takes to overcome obstacles: a rival high school’s best defensive tackle, a big game on a Friday night … and even cancer.

His years of chemotherapy are behind him. The experience taught him to rely on himself – but also when to turn to others. When things get tough, he can turn to his teammates at Mesquite High School, his family … and his memories of commanding the Oval Office.

Six years ago, Sterling was the leader of the free world. The memories of his day as President of the United States live with him to this moment.Sterling becomes President for a day

“It was very powerful,” Sterling says.

Make-A-Wish® arranged Sterling’s day at the White House. Decked out in a custom-tailored Brooks Brothers suit, Sterling became the nation’s youngest commander-in-chief.

“It is only in America that a little boy from Mesquite, Texas, can wish of someday being President of the United States and actually have that wish come true,” Sterling said at his inauguration.

He found purpose and strength during his day in office – the private meeting with members of Congress, the Blackhawk ride, the 21-gun salute. The collaboration spanned 12 departments. For a day, Sterling was defined by more than his diagnosis.

“It was a life-changing experience,” Sterling’s father recalls, still awestruck by the effort put into his son’s wish. “It opened my eyes up ... to make me realize how giving people can be of their time.”

Sterling knows that a wish come true can change everything. He is determined to, one day, give his time and energy to someone who needs inspiration and encouragement … just as he did.

"...in the future, I will find a way," he says.

Make a Wish Foundation of Indiana have fulfilled so many hearts of children that would NEVER have had their wishes fulfilled if it had not been for people like "Being President For a Day," "Zoo wishes," "A Queen For a Day" and many, many more. I have been a Wish Granter for Indiana for around 20 years and I thank God each day for the honor of being able to help fulfill wishes of our children that some was their LAST wish. Thanks to all that made these wishes come true for these children as my heart says "God bless you and I know you will be blessed over and over for your dedication to these children." I thank you "personally also." Bettina H.
