Justin Guards the Lighthouse

“His wish experience restored his energy and optimism for life”

With a mini flashlight in hand, Justin is ready to take charge and fulfill his duty as keeper of the Point Wilson Lighthouse.

Justin’s mom used to live in a lighthouse and hearing her stories he would always imagine the adventures of a lighthouse keeper - in control and brave. As this young boy struggled to stay in control of his immotile-cilia syndrome – a rare life-threatening lung disease, the Make-A-Wish® team knew his lighthouse dreams was a wish experience they needed to grant. With the help of the U.S. Coast Guard, the wish team created an experience that far exceeded Justin’s expectations.

The U.S. Coast Guard welcomes Justin as one of its own presenting him with an official flight suit. He is later inducted by the district admiral as an official member of the U.S. Coast Guard while his mom becomes overjoyed with tears.

Now a part of the team, Justin helps to steer the 87-foot cutter, Osprey, during its expedition in the Bay of Port Townsend. They then instruct Justin on his vital responsibilities as lighthouse keeper, equipping him with everything he needs for success on his rounds so he will be “always ready” like all Coast Guard personnel.

On their return home, Justin’s twin sister Michelle, his parents and his wish granters witnessed Justin’s rejuvenation. His Make-A-Wish experience restored his energy and optimism for life as he imagines a possible career in the Coast Guard.

I don’t think about being sick anymore. I just think about my wish.”

— Justin
