Darrius is having the perfect day. It has been two months since his last hospital visit. He spent the morning learning the ropes as a Phoenix P.D. rookie and was in the middle of a well-deserved donut break. Then, a group of thugs kidnaps his brother – right in front of him!
Earlier That Day
Darrius answers the door and finds a Phoenix police officer and his K9 companion, Kai. They’re here to swear Darrius in as an honorary officer. Once they have him in uniform, they start his training.
First up, Darrius learns how to team up with Kai. The well-trained dog responds to every command, even chasing down a suspect. Kai’s tail swishes as Darrius pats his head and calls him a good dog.
The day gets even more exciting at the Phoenix P.D. hanger. Darrius receives a flight suit, and then gets a ride in the department’s helicopter!
Breaktime Turns Serious
Cops call it Code 7. To the rest of us, it’s lunchtime! Darrius and his partner are eating donuts when they get a surprise visitor. It’s Baxter, the Arizona Diamondbacks mascot. The perpetually cheerful mascot gets even a serious cop like Darrius to grin.
And that’s when trouble strikes.
A band of men surround Darrius’ brother. They grab him from either side, and drag him outside. Darrius can’t believe his eyes … a kidnapping, right in front of police officers!
He hustles outside to a waiting police SUV and leads the chase. The suspects make the mistake of heading into the nearby home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Once Darrius directs the chase onto the field, the suspects realize they have no chance. They surrender, and Darrius soon has them in handcuffs.
A Good Two Months
This is more than a great day for Darrius. His mother, Andrea, couldn’t be happier. She sees Darrius acting like a normal boy his age. She sees him free from worry, alert, energetic, living his one true wish.
And she sees a community that cares. The Phoenix Police Department made his wish possible … every officer who participated gave genuine enthusiasm to making a great day for her son. Their kindness is in incredible gift – and it just might help Darrius find the emotional lift he needs to continue his recent run of improved health.
“It’s been two months since we’ve had to deal with any sickness or been in the hospital,” Andrea tells a local news crew. “So he’s been having a great two months so far – no shots, no IV fluids or anything like that.”
