Wish Wednesday: Music That Heals

Wish kid Ayden recieved a makeover to prepare for her performance.
Music can be therapeutic. The beats, rhythms and melodies of songs create an escape unlike any other, exposing raw emotion and fostering hope. For many wish kids, music is an essential part of their lives, allowing them a chance to escape the pain of treatments for moments at a time. To wish kids, music is a powerful form of medicine, instrumental in their recovery process.

Reflections on Granting Super Bowl XLIX Wishes

Make-A-Wish kid Shannon gives the thumbs up while at Super Bowl XLIX
Shanon is an 8-year-old who has devoted all his energy to overcoming leukemia since he was diagnosed in 2013. I had the privilege of meeting this amazing wish kid, along with the other 11 kids and their families, who wished to go to Super Bowl XLIX. What an honor to get to interact with these kids and their families! As an employee at Make-A-Wish America, I see, hear and write about wishes every day, but it is not every day that I get to actually interact with them. I had so much fun welcoming the kids and their families at a reception that Make-A-Wish Arizona held for them – complete with chocolate fondue and a ping pong table (Shanon has got some serious ping pong skills, y’all).

Wish Wednesday: Wishes Making Headlines

Wish kid Ava recieves a ballerina giraffe courtesy of Make-A-Wish and Build-A-Bear®.
While all wishes are inherently newsworthy, not all find their way into the headlines. Here are some wishes that have been picked up by media outlets this month, highlighting the happiness caused by Make-A-Wish experiences, the giving back that funds wishes and the organizations that support Make-A-Wish.

How a Caring Person Creates a Make-A-Wish Legacy

Amaya
There’s a way for any person to support Make-A-Wish in a personally meaningful way. Making a gift in your will is just one way you can support our mission. And often, that choice is a thoughtful reflection of personal experience. Our Planned Giving team would like to share excerpts from a conversation with Lynn F. as just one example of how supporters decide to include Make-A-Wish in a will. Lynn was originally introduced to Make-A-Wish when a friend’s niece was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and became eligible for a wish.

The Inspiration of Percussion

Ben and his new drum kit
This is going to sound a little silly, but I'd like you to do something for me. I'd like you to clap your hands together. Now, I'd like you to clap your hands twice. Stomp your feet. Clap again once more. Then twice again. Stomp. If you followed along with me, you may now have a bit of rhythm forming in your head. It's a musical beat that you could not only hear, but you could feel it throughout your entire body. Music has become a tactile experience … the rhythm coming into the body through the hands and the feet.

Wish Kid Couple Inspires with Wedding Fundraiser

While scrolling through the tweets that rolled in overnight, I stumbled upon this great story (and Make-A-Wish Wisconsin fundraiser). More than 10 years ago, Emily and John both received wishes from Make-A-Wish; John, to have a boat, and Emily, to go to Hawaii with her family. Now, both in remission, Emily and John are tying the knot. And, as an added bonus, they are raising money to grant more life-changing wishes for kids.

Ashley and the Aurora - Random Wish Kid Photo

Ronn Murray Ashley Aurora Northern Lights Make-A-Wish
Ashley remembers those chilly nights with her dad ... bundling up against the falling temperatures, gazing at the stars, hoping for meteors to sparkle in the night sky. Those nights instilled in Ashley wonder toward the universe and all its marvels. At some point, she learned of the aurora borealis .... for years, she imagined what it must be like to watch the green glow undulate across the sky. And she dreamed of the chance to see them in-person.

Making Memories for a Community

What are memories? How do we remember things? If you ask a neurologist how a memory becomes encoded in someone’s brain, you'll learn that an event causes an electrical and chemical reaction of sufficient magnitude in the hippocampus that it builds a set of proteins at a neural synapse. However, kids don’t think like that. They might say a memory is made by going to the circus, dancing with a pop star or flying a helicopter. If you ask a certain 7-year-old with leukemia, you might hear something completely unexpected – that her greatest memory comes from being an art teacher.
