From Wish Kid to Wish Granter

katie, volunteer, giving back, connecticut
Our guest blogger of the day had her wish granted just a few years ago. Katie's wish made such a difference in her life that she wanted to return the favor for other wish kids. She became a volunteer wish granter so she could help kids enduring challenges ... because who understands better than someone who's been there?

A Look Back at the Batkid Wish

Batkid, Batkid Begins, movie, psoe
Friday, November 15, 2013. It has been nearly two years, but I can still vividly remember how the day unfolded. On that particular day, I was in San Francisco to assist with a wish that was generating a lot of buzz in the media world. I, along with another colleague who works in PR, were on hand to provide ground support for the national media outlets that planned to attend the wish. With each day leading up to the wish, more and more big players in the media world joined the frenzy. They all converged on San Francisco to witness the inspiring wish for 5-year-old Miles to be a superhero. For his big day, Miles had affectionately been given the name … Batkid.

He was bed-ridden in his home, squeezed between a myriad of machines that helped him breathe and eat. He could barely speak – his throat and muscles were so sore. He managed to express that he wished to meet his favorite movie director before he fell back asleep, drained from all energy.

Questions People Ask Me About Working at Make-A-Wish

Imagine you are a child. A child sitting in a hospital room. You are fighting an illness. You’ve had a few surgeries, maybe missing some school. One day, someone in a blue t-shirt comes to visit you, and tells you that your wish has just come true. You now have the power to wish for anything in the entire world. A trip, a puppy … anything.

How do you feel? Happy? Excited? For some children and their parents, this excitement over a wish does not come easily. Sometimes, it comes with mixed feelings, guilt and even sadness

Wish Wednesday: Zack Gives Amazing Gift To Make-A-Wish

I was proud to work for Make-A-Wish from day one. It’s a recognized organization with amazing people that does great things. Every day, I am excited to go to work because it is a chance to learn and do something different.

In 35 years, Make-A-Wish has granted over 260,000 wishes with the help of staff and supporters. I know of one former wish kid who has accomplished great things for Make-A-Wish in just three years.

A Surprise Unlike Any Other

ESPN Sportscenter "My Wish", WWE, John Cena, Triple H
KJ, a 7-year-old wish kid with a chronic renal condition, walks hand-in-hand with his mom into a local movie theater to catch a morning showing. He enters the theater and notices a surprising lack of people. Every seat he sees is empty … except for one. Sitting by himself is a man who KJ instantly recognizes, but never expected to see in person. It is none other than Paul Levesque, otherwise known as WWE® Superstar Triple H®.

Showtime: Wishes on Broadway

For my birthday one year, I saw The Lion King during their national tour. Seeing my favorite Disney movie on stage was completely unforgettable. While I don’t remember every bit of dialogue, I do remember every song lyric and how I felt during and after the show. People around me were crying, and I’m pretty sure I was too.

Broadway is still on my bucket list. New York City is the hub of professional theatre, so a fanatic like myself has to go. But there are three wish kids that have already taken in the wonder of this.
