How 3 Communities Empowered Local Wish Kids

Make-A-Wish Oregon, Tristan
The wind whips out Kaheem’s cape as he surveys his city. The people of Washington, DC, are in trouble – he can feel it. There are evildoers afoot! Luckily for them, they have Super Kaheem to come to the rescue.

3 Kids Who Wished For Winter

Avery, Make-A-Wish America, Central and Northern Florida, Julie Richards Photography
Many wish kids dream of going on warm summer vacations, but a select few break that mold. Instead of sunny days on the beach or rides in a theme park, they dream of penguins, snowmen and skiing. The restorative power of winter gives these wish kids a chance to recuperate, and the wishes become even more powerful when they allow kids to experience winter for the very first time.

Unusual Skills Lead to Fantastic Wishes

Madison, Make-A-Wish America, Emma-Louise
At first glance, it would seem that a professional sandcastle builder and a construction worker have little in common. Sure, they both build structures of sorts. But they work in completely different places, and their goals are entirely dissimilar in every possible way.

3 Everyday People Who Granted Extraordinary Wishes

Ethan, Sam, garbage man, Make-A-Wish America, XSight Media
Sam is an everyday man with an everyday name and an everyday job. He wakes up every morning, ready to clear the refuse from the streets of Sacramento, and he goes home every night knowing that, because of him, the city will be a little cleaner than before.

The Original Wish Mom

Linda Pauling, Chris Greicius, Make-A-Wish Arizona
Linda wears glasses, a green cap and a Make-A-Wish sweatshirt, a sort of casual-but-spirited look. Her grey hair peeks out from underneath her hat, and her blue eyes have a kindness behind them that is seldom matched.

Thinking of a Wish on Sisters Serve the World Day

Chi Omega, Katlyn Gould, Sisters Serve the World Day
When I was 14 years old, I was battling all the normal fears of being a freshman in high school: terrifying older students, big lockers and a huge school that I was bound to get lost in. But this was nothing compared to a greater battle I was fighting: stage three Hodgkin’s lymphoma, an aggressive form of cancer in the lymph nodes. Over the period of six months, I went through four rounds of rigorous chemotherapy and eight weeks of radiation treatment. Finally, on Nov. 22, 2007, I was declared in remission and am proud to say I am nine years cancer-free.

Military Personnel Help Wish Kids Fight Off Illness

Carl, WWII pilot, military, Make-A-Wish America
With options like amusement parks and trips abroad, it may be surprising that so many wish kids dream to be in the military for a day. Sometimes, they are inspired by a relative who serves or has served in the past, but that’s not always the case … so why does experiencing military service appeal to them?

My Experience at Walk For Wishes

Walk for Wishes, Phoenix, 2016
Teams in matching shirts, makeup and tutus pass by my car window as I sit, scoping out the scene. In the few brief moments I’ve been here, I’ve already seen a wide variety of supporters, including moms with strollers, siblings racing back and forth, and dads with puppy-dogs in tow. Though it’s only 7:30 am – too early for this kind of excitement and too dark outside to keep my eyes open – I’m glad I came.

Random Wish Kid Photo: Jillian Welcomes Her New Puppy

Jillian Puppy Wish
It's difficult not to use the word 'adorable' when you see this picture of Jillian. I came across it after researching wishes and was struck by how happy she seemed. But as with all wish kids, a photo can never sum up the steps it has taken them to get to the point of celebration and smiles.

Random Wish Kid Photo: Braxton's Last Day of Chemo

Braxton Wish Kid
Every so often, I come across a photo of a wish kid that makes me re-consider my perspective on the wish granting process and what it means to be involved with Make-A-Wish. In this picture, wish kid Braxton smiles about a significant milestone in his 6 years of life. He's gotten through chemotherapy and is about to go on a wish trip to his favorite theme park. But there is always more to the story.
