Wish to Have Recording Studio Helps Wesley Feel Free from Cancer

An 8-foot-tall inspirational graffiti mural decorates a corner of Wesley's recording studio.
Instead of a comfortable retreat, 13-year-old Wesley’s bedroom had become the place he associated with being stuck in bed, too sick to get out of the house. When it came time to choose a wish, Wesley knew he wanted to create a new space where he could find peace and escape his cancer diagnosis.

“I wish to have a video recording studio in my basement,” he told Make-A-Wish® Connecticut. “Somewhere I can make videos to share with my friends online.”

Playing Basketball with Dirk Nowitzki Helped Me Turn My Life Around

Anna's wish was to meet Dirk Nowitzki, power forward for the Dallas Mavericks.
Most of her life, Anna has experienced headaches and dizzy spells. Doctors often speculated these were caused by stress or anxiety — perhaps even allergies. But in February 2016, Anna received a far more devastating diagnosis: She had a brain tumor. On Feb. 25, 2016, she endured six hours of life-saving brain surgery.

“It’s True. It’s All True” – How a Wish Changed a Skeptic’s Mind

Loreen Kelley, Bon Iver, Justin Vernon, Make-A-Wish
I love skeptical minds. They reject glib answers in search of truth. They question, they doubt, they investigate. And if you win a skeptic over? Well, you earn a smart, thoughtful advocate.

Stay Strong, Solve the Problem: The Differences in a Dad's Journey

Make-A-Wish Fathers Day
In my past life, prior to working at Make-A-Wish, I worked in online communications for Autism Speaks. As I was exposed to countless parents who were grappling with an autism diagnosis for their child, I noticed an interesting trend: Moms sought each other out; they posted to their Facebook profiles asking for advice. They poured their hearts out to each other, seeking solace in the community of their friends and family. Dads preferred to stand back. They would go online at night (typically after everyone in their household had gone to bed) and do countless hours of research. A new obstacle had presented itself in their life’s plan and it was up to them to solve it. Men are protectors and fixers.
